Important knowledge

This just in: My younger siblings have discovered that if you remove the stem from a leaf of romaine lettuce, trim it nicely, and wash it well, you have yourself a magnificent straw. Who would have thought?!?! Watch out, straw manufacturers! This could rock your world. It remains unclear, however, just how this will work for chocolate milkshakes. More research is necessary. Stay tuned for updates, and perhaps a photo of this technique in action.

For the record, this particular younger sibling did not participate in the said test, although I may have suggested it.

It is advisable to not try this technique of drinking as it makes your drink taste very much like lettuce.

Yuck! I don't think lettuce flavored choclate milkshake would be very good!

In my growing experience, a number of factors contribute to a larger hollow 'core' on lettuce leaves (not considered a positive agricultural trait) -- excessive nitrogen fertilizer, fast growth, mineral imbalance, etc.

"Lactucarium is the milky fluid secreted by several species of lettuce, especially Lactuca virosa, usually from the base of the stems. Lactucarium is known as lettuce opium because of its sedative and analgesic properties." (From Wikipedia)
